Our tips include everything from packing to organisation. If we have missed any you believe should be on this list or other packing hacks then get in touch – we’ll happily add to the list!

We also created a handy printable moving house checklist for you to download!

1. DON’T LEAVE IT TO THE LAST MINUTE!

Sounds obvious but you would be surprised how many people do leave packing their belongings to the last minute. You should start planning your move within 30 to 60 days to help ensure that your move goes as smoothly as possible.

2. ASK THE EXPERTS

If you are using a removals company, make sure you keep your removals company in the loop so they know exactly what is going on. This can include issues such as access restrictions to your new or old property and overweight items. It also helps to ensure the moving date is fixed and weather suitable!

3. PACK IN A DOWNWARD SYSTEM

Pack your house in a downward system, starting at the top of the house and working down till eventually all of your possessions within the house have been packed. This will help make sure you don’t miss anything of importance during the move.

4. PURGE UNWANTED POSSESSIONS

Don’t be afraid to get rid of possessions you no longer want or need. You could even send them to charity or make yourself some money by selling them online through auction sites or car boot sales. Every little helps, especially when you want to redecorate or renovate your new home.

5. ESTIMATE & ACQUIRE BOXES FOR YOUR MOVE

Although difficult, try to estimate the number of boxes you will require to pack all your belongings. Take in to account the fact you will more than likely need a variety of small and large boxes to pack up all items in your home.

6. WRAP IT UP

Often forgotten, you will also need items such as bubble wrap to protect valuables; self-seal bags to store loose screws and packing tape to make sure everything stays packed and boxed correctly.

7. LOAD LOW PRIORITY BOXES FIRST

Always load the boxes containing the items you need least first onto the removals lorry, as they will be the last boxes to enter your new home when you arrive.

8. PACKAGE HAZARDOUS PRODUCTS SEPARATELY

Always pack hazardous materials such as bleach, aerosols and paint completely separate to the rest of your belongings to avoid any damage to your possessions. Spillages can sometimes occur during moves if items are not packed or stored correctly.

9. CHECK YOUR INSURANCE POLICY

Check that your contents insurance will cover damage or breakage during your move. Although breakages are unlikely to happen it is always good to check and be prepared.

10. LABEL ALL BOXES

Label all your boxes by room name i.e. kitchen, bedroom 2 etc. This will help to ensure your belongings don’t get mixed up during the move and your kitchen appliances don’t end up in your bedroom.

11. REDIRECT YOUR POST

Don’t forget to redirect your post to your new home! This sounds obvious but can often be forgotten when the big day comes around, especially with everything else going on.

12. SAVE THE TEA AND COFFEE

Always pack an ‘essentials box’ – especially for the first night in your new home. This can include products such as tea, coffee, snacks, kettle, kitchen utensils and kitchen towel. This will allow you to have your first night in comfort without having to rummage through all your possessions to find the essentials.

13. PACK AN OVERNIGHT BAG

One of the most important tips is to prepare an overnight bag with the necessary toiletries; clothes and electronic chargers to keep you and the family going while you spend the first night in your new home.

14. START WITH THE HEAVY ITEMS FIRST

Always pack heavy items into smaller boxes as packing into large boxes can lead to heavy and unmovable boxes. Or even worse, it could lead to the breaking of boxes, which could leave your valuable possessions damaged or strewn on to the pavement.

15. DO NOT USE BLACK BIN BAGS

Never pack your belongings into black bin bags. Whilst it can sometimes feel the easier option, it does open you up to ripped bags and items that are meant to be for your home thrown away by friendly helpers…

16. MOVING IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

Store all your important documents in a single box and make sure you know exactly where they end up, reducing the risk of loss or damage to your most valuable documents.

17. MOVE FURNITURE IN FIRST

We strongly recommend moving in your furniture first. This will stop you having to move boxes around within your new home to make space for your furniture when it arrives.

18. CLEAN YOUR NEW HOME BEFORE YOU MOVE IN

Try and get to your home before the removals team do with your possessions, this will allow you to give your new home a good clean in preparation for your belongings.

19. HEAVY BEFORE LIGHT

Pack heavy items at the bottom of your box. This will stop items crushing or breaking your valuables during the move. The same applies for boxes. Heavy boxes should be placed at the bottom to ensure light boxes aren’t crushed.

20. FILL IN THE EMPTY GAPS

Don’t waste precious box space and fill in empty gaps. This can be done by stuffing gaps with newspaper, packing paper, old rags or towels. This will helps reduce any movement of items and will minimise risk of damage and breakages during the move.
